This is an excellent lesson as a first step to anyone wanting to understand the use of naginata through a solid foundation in the basics. Learning the basic cuts or strikes of a weapon well is often avoided by people in their hurry to go to actual waza but, if one thinks about it, that works poorly at best. After all, if you cannot even cut correctly with the naginata at the most basic level, how can you proceed to using the weapon correctly in a complex waza? The cuts are demonstrated concisely at a basic but powerful level, building a solid foundation for everything that comes later. With correct form comes strong, precise cutting, opening the world of the naginata to the serious practitioner who is willing to invest the needed time and effort in these basics.
